Every residential address in Mecklenburg County has a home elementary, middle, and high school. Assignment is determined by boundary maps maintained by the district and revised through a public process. Because the process is public and periodic, boundaries in growth areas like south Charlotte do change.

The district's online school locator is the authoritative tool. Enter the exact street address. Do not rely on a listing sheet, a third-party school-rating site, or a neighbor's memory of which school their children attended a decade ago.

Magnet and choice programs

Beyond the home school, CMS operates a substantial magnet and school-choice program — language immersion, IB, STEM, montessori, and arts programs among them — allocated by application and lottery, with transportation provided from designated stops for many programs.

Application windows open months ahead of the school year. Families relocating mid-cycle frequently miss them, so it is worth learning the calendar before you move rather than after.

Independent and parochial schools

Schools and resale

In Charlotte, assignment affects value. Buyers should understand that a boundary revision is a real, if infrequent, risk to that component of value — and that it cuts both ways. Do not buy a house you otherwise dislike because of an assignment that may not exist in five years.
